Located 13 miles west of Twin Falls on Routes 93/30 in Twin Falls County, Filer is a quiet, rural community of approximately 4,200. It is a friendly community that hosts the annual Magic Valley Stampede, which brings 90,000 people from all over the region to this event. Filer is a true community, where people know you by name, and the quality of life is peaceful.
Filer was named after Walter G. Filer, general manager of Twin Falls Water and Land Company. Filer, a mining engineer from Pennsylvania, supervised the construction of the famed Milner division dam on the Snake River. Filer was the last stop of Oregon Short Line’s Twin Falls branch.
Shopping and Dining
Filer residents have access to big box shopping centers and malls. There is a Walmart Supercenter, Target, and Fred Meyer in nearby Twin Falls. Magic Valley Mall is home to JCPenney, Sears, Macy’s, Shopko, Barnes & Noble, American Eagle, Victoria’s Secret, Chico’s, Finish Line, AT & T, The Children’s Place, T-Mobile, Bath & Body Works, Five Guys Burgers, Buffalo Wild Wings Grill, Mrs. Powells, Jamba Juice, Lotus House, and more. Lynwood Shopping Center includes Galaxy Awards & Engraving, Anytime Fitness, Attitudes Hair & Nail Salon, Mr. Juan’s College-Hair Design, Hair Classics, Idaho Joe’s, Copy It, Dollar Tree, Kurt’s Pharmacy, Subway, New China Buffet, and Sakura Steakhouse.
The area has a number of popular restaurants, including Cedar Lanes/Perky’s Pizza (a favorite spot for bowling), Mama Lazagna’s, Sun Lounge, Tracy’s Curry Junction, Prasai’s Thai, Carino’s Italian, and Gertie’s Brick Oven Cookery.
Parks and Recreation
Southern Idaho is known for its outdoor recreation, and visitors from all over the country camp, hike, rock climb, mountain bike, fish, and boat in this beautiful region. Filer itself is famous for hosting the annual Twin Falls County Fair and Magic Valley Stampede. The Stampede includes rodeos, agricultural and livestock exhibits and programs, flea market, gun show, farm banquet, technology expo, Girl Scout rally, gem show, and more.
Another popular annual event is the Cardboard Boat Regatta, a.k.a. “Marine Mayhem,” which is held nearby at Dierkes Lake at Shoshone Falls. Three classes of boats, one rowed, another with a muscle-powered device, and the third built on site the day of the event, compete in 20-yard heats. The kits are supplied by Longview Fibre. The designs have ranged from Egyptian, Chinese dragon, pirate ship, and army tanks. The crew outfit themselves to reflect their boat’s theme as well. The waterfalls for which Idaho Falls is named bring visitors from around the country. Pillar Falls is known for the I.B. Perrine Bridge, a popular B.A.S.E. Jumping destination. Shoshone Falls, Thousand Springs, Balanced Rock, and Massacre Rock have picnicking, boating, camping, hiking, mountain biking, and rock climbing. Magic Mountain Resort is located in the South Hills Area of Sawtooth National Forest, near Hansen, and is the state’s most local ski and snowboarder mountain. Filer has a number of area parks with amenities, including Filer Community Park, Rock Creek Park, Barry Park, Harrison Park, Frontier Park, Centennial Waterfront Park, Eastman Park, and Harmon Park. Centennial Waterfront Park is a half-mile from the aforementioned Perrine Bridge, and has covered pavilions and shelters, boat tours, and great scenic views.

College of Southern Idaho, a community college in Twin Falls, offers a full spectrum of curriculum and classes by Boise State University and Idaho State University. St. Luke’s Magic Valley is a newer medical center that serves the region. Trans IV provides public transportation, and is operated by College of Southern Idaho. Joslin Field-Magic Valley Regional Airport provides flights to Salt Lake City International Airport. The city’s major arterials are Routes 30, 93, and Interstate 84.
